Shape Dynamics is a radical yet soundly based reinterpretation of Einstein's theory of gravity that has opened up new approaches to gravity research. This text offers both a brief introduction and a detailed walk-through of the motivations for the theory, its development from first principles and an in-depth look at its present status. This textbook on the nature of space and time explains the new theory of Space Dynamics, which describes the dynamics of gravity as the evolution of conformal 3-dimensional geometry. Shape Dynamics is equivalent to Einstein's General Relativity in those situations in which the latter has been tested experimentally, but the theory is based on different first principles. It differs from General Relativity in certain extreme conditions. Shape Dynamics allows us to describe situations in which the spacetime picture is no longer adequate, such as in the presence of singularities, when the idealization of infinitesimal rods measuring scales and infinitesimal clocks measuring proper time fails. This tutorial book contains both a quick introduction for readers curious about Shape Dynamics, and a detailed walk-through of the historical and conceptual motivations for the theory, its logical development from first principles and a description of its present status. It includes an explanation of the origin of the theory, starting from problems posed first by Newton more than 300 years ago. The book will interest scientists from a large community including all foundational fields of physics, from quantum gravity to cosmology and quantum foundations, as well as researchers interested in foundations. The tutorial is sufficiently self-contained for students with some basic background in Lagrangian/Hamiltonian mechanics and General Relativity.

Information theory is essentially about correlations, and the novel approach of Bananaworld is to get at what's counterintuitive about quantum information by considering correlations between normally mundane experiences that every reader can relate to.What on earth do bananas have to do with quantum mechanics? From a modern perspective, quantum mechanics is about strangely counterintuitive correlations between separated systems, which can be exploited in feats like quantum teleportation, unbreakable cryptographic schemes, and computers with enormously enhanced computing power. Schrodinger coined the term "entanglement" to describe these bizarre correlations. Bananaworld - an imaginary island with "entangled" bananas - brings to life the fascinating discoveries of the new field of quantum information without the mathematical machinery of quantum mechanics. The connection with quantum correlations is fully explained in sections written for the non-physicist reader with a serious interest in understanding the mysteries of the quantum world. The result is a subversive but entertaining book that is accessible and interesting to a wide range of readers, with the novel thesis that quantum mechanics is about the structure of information. What we have discovered is that the possibilities for representing, manipulating, and communicating information are very different than we thought.

The most up-to-date treatment available on modern optics. The text gives an overview of the topics and an introduction to design practices for a number of applications. It provides the student with the foundations to enter into advanced courses in nonlinear optics, lens design, laser system design, and optical communications.Modern Optics is a fundamental study of the principles of optics using a rigorous physical approach based on Maxwell's Equations. The treatment provides the mathematical foundations needed to understand a number of applications such as laser optics, fiber optics and medical imaging covered in an engineering curriculum as well as the traditional topics covered in a physics based course in optics. In addition to treating the fundamentals in optical science, the student is given an exposure to actual optics engineering problems such as paraxial matrix optics, aberrations with experimental examples, Fourier transform optics (Fresnel-Kirchhoff formulation), Gaussian waves, thin films, photonic crystals, surface plasmons, and fiber optics. Through its many pictures, figures, and diagrams, the text provides a good physical insight into the topics covered. The course content can be modified to reflect the interests of the instructor as well as the student, through the selection of optional material provided in appendixes.

This book explains in clear terms for non-specialists what is happening at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics located near Geneva. It starts from the basics to build a solid understanding of the relevance of current research in particle physics.CERN, the European Laboratory for particle physics, regularly makes the news. What kind of research happens at this international laboratory and how does it impact people's daily lives? Why is the discovery of the Higgs boson so important? Particle physics describes all matter found on Earth, in stars and all galaxies but it also tries to go beyond what is known to describe dark matter, a form of matter five times more prevalent than the known, regular matter. How do we know this mysterious dark matter exists and is there a chance it will be discovered soon? About sixty countries contributed to the construction of the gigantic Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and its immense detectors. Dive in to discover how international teams of researchers work together to push scientific knowledge forward. Here is a book written for every person who wishes to learn a little more about particle physics, without requiring prior scientific knowledge. It starts from the basics to build a solid understanding of current research in particle physics. A good dose of curiosity is all one will need to discover a whole world that spans from the infinitesimally small and stretches to the infinitely large, and where imminent discoveries could mark the dawn of a huge revolution in the current conception of the material world.

Chalcogenide semiconductors, counterpart of their crystalline form are widely known for their industrial applications. Different approaches are applied to study the conduction mechanism to explore these materials. The measurements on electrical and photoelectrical properties of a-Sb2Se3, Ag-Sb2Se3 and Se25Ge20Te55 over a wide range of frequency (5 Hz-100 kHz), and temperature (230-340 K) under dark and illuminated conditions indicate that Ag-doped chalcogenide is sensitive to thermal and electrical stresses and hence could be used in various device applications. It is clear that pure and doped chalcogenides behave very differently on the grounds of electrical and photo-electrical properties. The available theoretical models for amorphous semiconductors are used to explain the observed behaviour of the chalcogenides and modifications are suggested. Further, a possible applications of Ag-Sb2Se3 as thermal/voltage sensor and Se25Ge20Te55 as optoelectronic switch has also been studied.

This book is about the techniques of advances and recent trends in circuits be given the same wide and enthusiastic acceptance by practising engineers, R & D Professionals, University professors and even graduate students that my other books in this area have unlike the traditional books available in the area of power electronics, this book has a unique presentation format that makes it convenient for group presentations. Next to having an actual system to experiment on, electronics is often chosen by engineers to study transient and control performance or to test conceptual designs. Its use in teaching is growing now that inexpensive and powerful personal computers with simulation capabilities previously available only in specialized facilities are widely accessible to students. There are many excellent textbooks on electric machine models, operating principles and steady state Characteristics, but few dwell on the implementation of simulations.
